What is my Engine
I recently acquired a 460 from a friend! I have the casting numbers and im trying to figure out what is is. The block numer is d1ve-6015 b and the head numbers are d3ve-a2a. Im trying to figure out if it is 429-460 if possible and im trying to figure out cc size and deck height to see if i need to find an older head. Im trying to get my compression ratio to at least 10:1. Also im trying to find out if the head has been milled? Does anybody know how i can measur the head to find out. Thanks
you can't tell from the casting numbers if it is a 429 or 460. they both used the same block and heads. the crank and pistons were the difference between the two so you have to either measure the stroke or drop the pan and check the casting number on the crank to determine if it is a429 or 460 for sure.
from the casting numbers you ave given, you have a engine built between 73 and 78. the D1VE block came out in 1971 and the DV3E heads appeared in 1973. the D1VE block was used till late 78 or early 79 when the D9TE block came out. the heads were used till about 87 when they went to fuel injection.
the D3 heads have 2.08" intake valves and around 95cc combustion chambers and horrible exhaust ports. the early heads have the same size valves and 77cc chambers and the same horrible exhaust ports. swapping the heads to the early style heads (C8VE, C9VE or DOVE heads) will gain you about 1 compression point, so will get you around 9 or 9.5:1 ratio depending on what you are starting with.
hope thi shelps.

they were either 10 or 10.5:1, can't remember exactly. i think the SCJ motors were around 11:1.
the casting number is on one of the counterweights. i think it is the first one, but just look at the front counterweights and it should be on there.
also the best bang for you buck is to change the late retarded timing chain set out for the pre-71 timing gear set that put the cam straight up. this makes a noticeable difference in performance.
