Got a 460 out of a 77 f-250. Can't read casting number. Can I assume it is a D3 or 73 or later casting with the 10.32 deck height? heads are D3VE. Sending it to machine shop for clean up and bore 30 over for new pistons. Might deck it to match DOVE block it is replacing. Just trying decide what pistons I want to figure comp ratio with 76cc heads.
No you can't assume that at all, first off someone might have swapped it at one time or another, and second off the D3VE heads from the factory would could have either been on a D1VE or a D9TE blocks, now both are 10.32 deck height but the D1VE would be an internal balanced engine, the D9TE would be external balance.
Figured I might as well post this here, as it is an existing 460 block ID thread.
Here's my numbers:
Block: D1VE-6015-A2B
Oil pan: D5VE-6675-A
Heads: Driver's side: D3VE-A2A
Pass side: D VE-A2A (the blank is intentional. There is no second character)
Distributer tag: D7TE 12127 ALA
Just wondering where the engine came from and how it compares to others.
Work your magic!
Thanks.
well the head with the blank is the same as the other side it's supposed to be a D3VE otherwise the dist tag would indicate a 77 T indicates truck line but other than that the base engine is the same as any of the 73-78 460s
I suspect the distributer tag to be not much of a help. The PO installed the 460 many many years ago after the original 351M/400 was removed. Not too far of a stretch to imagine a distributer being pulled from another donor vehicle.
I got the block numbers from down near the starter, but was unable to see any 4 digit codes resembling those you provided. Not real easy seeing around the exhaust manifold, starter, and leaf springs when you are laying in the street.
the date casting number on the block is most likely in hte lifter gallery and if the truck originally had a 351m/400 in it then it quit possibly has the original dist to the truck since they use the same dist in both the 335 and 385 series of engines. Makes it real simple for hooking up the ignition if you just use the dist out of the original engine especially if it's electronic and the donor engine isn't
