Flareside tailgate question

I was looking through LMC's catalog at tailgates for my 66' F350. Technically they list them only for F100s and F250s. I about to assume they were all the same, but I notice they list two different part numbers 49-8320 for shortbeds and 49-8321 for longbeds. Are they REALLY different? If so, is either correct for my VERY longbed (9 feet)?

Thanks.

I'm sure ND will explain this better, but 8'+ beds are actually taller (like 4-5") than the short bed flare (step) sides. Check out Dan Carpenter for cool bed parts.

Yes. Just like a CV is different from a CVE.
1957/72: There are TWO different (non Mercury) Flareside tailgates.

B7C8340700A .. Flareside Tailgate / 49 13/16" long / Obsolete

Fits: 1957/60 F100 110" wheelbase // 1961/72 F100 114" & 115" wheelbases.

WESLEY OBSOLETE PARTS in Liberty KY has TWO = 606-787-5293.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has FIVE = 800-543-4959.

No Ford Dealer, no other obsolete parts vendor has any.
-------------------------------------------------------
B7D8340700A .. Flareside Tailgate / 54 13/16" long / Obsolete

Fits: 1957/60 F100 118" wheelbase // 1961/63 F100 120" & 122" wheelbases.

Fits: 1964/72 F100 120" - 128" - 129" - 131" wheelbases.

Fits: 1957/72 F250/350 all wheelbases.

GREEN SALES CO. has THREE.

COLLECTORS AUTO SUPPLY in Oroville WA has ? = 800-414-4462.

This place shows they have 22 of everything, whatever obsolete part it is, so they may have ONE, or?

So I've been told by fellow members, this place is rude to ppl on the phone, and when they promise to call ppl back, they do not. Caveat Emptor!

No Ford Dealer, no other obsolete parts vendor has any.
------------------------------------------------------
CBBAH8340700A .. MERCURY Flareside Tailgate / 54 13/16" long / Obsolete

Fits: 1957/68 MERCURY.

Numberdummy,
CVEs were WAY before my time but I appreciate the naval analogy. As usual you are my Ford parts hero; thanks.

The OP is a retired US Naval officer.

CV = US Navy abbreviation for a Fleet (large) Aircraft Carrier (not nuclear powered).

CVE = US Navy abbreviation for (WWII) Escort Carrier's, which were built on merchant ship hulls. These were called "Jeep" Carriers because of their picayune size.

Frank "Spig" Wead was the naval officer who came up with the Escort Carrier idea in 1942, the Brits also had a hand in it.

Most CVE's were used in Anti-Submarine Patrols...escorting convoy's across the Atlantic, and for fire support during invasions, mostly in the PTO (Pacific Theater of Operations).

The CVE was the death knell of Admiral Doenitz's U-Boats. Once convoy's began receiving air protection, the U-Boats "Happy Time" was over.

For more info on CVE's, look up "The Battle of Samar" = Jeeps vs Giants!

For a history of Frank Wead, watch the John Ford film "On Wings of Eagles" that was released in 1957, starring the actor who got his nickname...Duke...from his dog!

If I started typing everything I know, I'd be typing 24 hours a day...for weeks!

What would you like me to begin with... Architecture, Zydeco, or something in between?

It's a poor dog that doesn't wag its own tail, kiddo.

If I wasn't here on FTE doing what I do with Ford part numbers, searching for obsolete parts, who else would?

No one. Because...not only does no one else have the resources I have, no one else has any Ford parts experience, and no one else is dumb enough to do it....especially for free.

I'll remember your tactiless comment...the next time you need something.

All in good fun guys...I hope. Remember, "No breaks in Naval Air."

I WILL look for that movie; sounds interesting.

ND you remind me of my dad. He knows something about EVERYTHING and can do it himself. I don't know what I will do when he is gone; which at 72 years of age and still smoking a pack-a-day must be coming fast. Well, now I'm drifting. Thanks for the info and now I am off to start another Post

Now you've Jinxed me, in the 6 years I have been here I've never needed your great council, like when you said Canadian warranty #'s were not Ford numbers, or that 262's were available in F100s besides '64. I hope when I get old I know it all, until then I will have to sadly remain one of the unwashed minions, with one of those Non-Ford VINs from Oakville.
I never said that Canadian warranty numbers were not Ford numbers.

What I did say was: Canadian warranty numbers (VIN's) are not the same as US VIN's prior to 1966.

From the 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / General Information Section / Page 28 / 1965 Rating or Warranty Plate-Typical CANADIAN built vehicles: Sample VIN: 4991014L-195001A

Page 27: 1965 Rating or Warranty Plate-Typical US built vehicles: Sample VIN: F10DR465001

Just because a 1964 sales brochure says "The 262 is now available in F100's" does not mean it was not available previously.

People that believe everything a sales brochure says...need to a course in Reality 101.

I've decoded...at least five different VIN's here on FTE for 1961/63 F100's that had a VIN engine code of B.

B = 1961/64: 262 1V L/D.

The 1957/63 Ford truck parts catalog lists 262 engine parts for F100's. Get a copy and look for yourself.
