Was cruising in my happy camper, (1972 F250). Stopped for gas and back on the road when I noticed that the speedo was not working. Stopped and checked the cable under the dash, (okay), checked cable routing itself, (seems okay). Wanted to know if anyone had a similar dillema? Could it be a gear driven off the tranny, (inside the housing) or are the speedos know to malfunction? I've found a junk yard with a few donors, so thanks for any leads to solve my prob.
I would imagine the best way to diagnose is to pull the cable out and inspect the entire length and the drive ends. Then put the truck on jack stands and see if the drive turns, if all that checks then it would be the gauge. Good time to lube the cable anyway.
Thanks for the replies. I guess she'll make a liar out of me. Started working steady again... Need to look into this.
Inside the speedo cable's housing is a woven steel core. It is supposed to be lubed very so often with a thin film of white lithium grease.
When the grease dries out, the woven core binds up inside the housing, and eventually snaps into two pieces.
Autoparts stores sell a "Universal' core kit. You cut it to length, install in the housing.
At the transmission end of the cable is the speedometer DRIVEN gear, which can strip. I doubt this is the problemo, since the speedo began working again.
