I've got a 91 f250 4x4 with e4od that was rebuilt about a year ago. It also has had a US Gear dual range auxilary trans installed. I bought it about 3 months ago. It drove great at first then the speedo started acting up. Then it started shifting spasticaly. I took it to a friend that has a trans shop. He pulled codes and told me to replace tach sensor. I replaced it to no change except a few days later the speedo stopped working all together. I replaced speed sensor wich is in line with speedo cable. No speedo. Replaced worn out drive and driven gear on the end of the speedo cable. Speedo works. But on the 4-3 downshift it doesn't shift back to 3 untill you give it gas then it jerks. My friend said to replace the valves in the accumulator. Replaced valves still have the same downshift problem. Next he tould me that it could be the check ***** in the main valve body. Haven't done this yet. Have anyone ever heard of these check ***** wearing down or breaking? Any help would be great.
These E4ODs are funny critters. Have you tried disconnecting the battery overnight, which allows the computer to reset? It may be a bit of a long shot but after it was acting up I don't think it could hurt anything. Let the thing relearn everything. Best thing I can think of if the weird shifting and speedo fix happened at the same time.
Have you updated the part thing by the shift lever on the tranny? This tells the tranny when to shift. It is external right on the shifter linkage. Might not have been done when the tranny was rebuilt because it is external. Ford makes an update kit for it, just a new plug that retrofits the old plug and new part. I forget what it's called but someone here should be able what it's called this is where I found out about it.
It seems to be shifting fine every other time except on the 4-3. Like if I'm driving about 40ish start to slow down for a stop light to about 25 then the light turns green I go to give it gas, it briefly freewheels then kicks in kind of hard. Would that shift indicater thing cause anything like that?
