Well backstory first, My grandpa bought a 71 in 71, a guy bought it new and then his wife got pregnant so he sold it to my grandpa to get a more kid friendly vehicle. It was a single cab Flareside, green, 302 wit a 3 on the tree... with overdrive. the guy right after he bought it took it to a shop and had a blaukpunkt am/fm stereo and dual exhaust with glasspacks. well my dad ended up with the truck in the late seventies, and took it to a Ford dealership for some work, and the guy said that it wasn't an option for a 3-speed with overdrive, and when they went looking through Ford's book, it said that some trucks were special ordered that way. but that it was a very rare thing.
Does anyone know if there is any truth to this? unfortunately my dad got rid of the truck in the early 90s. I loved riding around in that thing!
3 speed with OD was outlawed by the feds in 1972, it is a common option not rare for the slicks and bumps. The truck would roll in gear when stopped and in OD and the parking brake not engaged and deemed unsafe in the Ralph Nader days..

3 Speed Ford with a warner T86 overdrive unit.
The ford mechanic is a twit.
The Warner O/D was introduced in 1941 Lincoln's; 1949 Ford/Merc passenger cars and 1953 F100's.
1936/40 Lincoln Zephyr's; 1940 Lincoln Continental's; 1936/48 Ford/Mercury passenger cars used the Columbia 2 speed rear axle.
Warner T-86 Overdrive: 1953/64 F100 / 1949/64 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars / 1965/67 Ford Passenger Cars w/260/289 engines.
Warner T-85N Overdrive = 1965/71 F100 / 1965/67 Ford Galaxie/LTD with 352's / 1941/51 Lincoln.
The 3 speed transmission is a Warner, not a Ford.
The Ford Type 3.03 3 speed all syncromesh transmission was not available with O/D.
