Clutch chatter

I posted a while back about a new clutch in my '68 360 F-100 that caused a bad vibration. Well, the mechanic got rid of that clutch and put and put in one that had just as bad a chatter/grab at take off. The one after that had the same problem just to a lesser degree. Anyway, he's going back into it tomorrow for the fourth time. All that hasn't been done is to replace the pilot bearing. A new (not reman) pressure plate, disk and release bearing have all been installed more than once. Anybody know the trick to making this thing work right? DB

Nowhere did I see that you had the flywheel resurfaced. Have it done and check for runout. Can't believe this won't "fix" the chatter. Good luck,

I failed to mention it, but the flywheel was resurfaced the first time and runout checked. It was removed and rechecked last time too. We'll see later today if the fourth time is a charm. Nobody I've talked to can believe it's not working right. DB

If the fourth time is not a charm, then it is time to get a new, not remanufactured, Ford clutch pack. Others can make all sorts of claims but a new Ford clutch assembly is the way to go, especially with your troubles. Although pricey, there are few things worse than a chattering clutch.

I have never experienced the need to do so but I've heard stories of the bell housing and or tranny case needing wedges between them to correct alignment problems. Good luck, let us know what the resolve is.

A guy in my office who, in his younger years, used to change right side rubber for Jimmy Hensley told me there was a time when clutches sometimes had to be shimmed to get equal clearances all around. He was talking older than mine though.

Maybe I need to be looking at this from a different perspective--it's keeping me off the street.

Unfortunately, it is a new one--they all have been. And unfortunately it was pricey--$265 for the kit.

Just to let ya'll know, the fourth install is by far the best yet. I can even start off on a little incline without the clutch trying to grab, if I do it a little slower than I like to. It still ain't right, though. I've been driving on it for about a week now and it seems to be getting a little better...or I'm getting used to it. Thanks to all for the advice. I'll be back later with wheels and rear-ends and windshield wipers and who knows what else. DB

I gave up on a 3-sp because it had a bad input shaft bearing and other engine and steering gear conversion issues. I talked to someone that had similar symptoms whose main tranny shaft broke because of a bad input shaft bearing. when I inspected my flywheel, clutch parts, and pilot bearing, I came to the conclusion that the chatter was coming from the input shaft.
