Some consider deleting the mixer (with the screens in it) an upgrade and do that on purpose. I never had the problem with the mixer and decided not to do it because of complication with replacement filter. There is a whole pictorial somewhere on the forum how to do it.
I believe galvanized steel tubings are pretty standard for the application.

Diesel will dissolve the zinc galvanization layer, and it may end up on your injector tips, that's why stainless is typically recommended.

My whole tank is galvanized steel. I heard the stories about bio reacting with zinc, but I burned over 200 gallons of straight bio in my truck with no ill effect.
Sure SS is unbeatable. Just popped up in my mind. Check for old stock brake lanes in local automotive place. Quite often they keep old prices. Just few years ago I bought starter for old Ford LTD for $25.

Your f-450 stock steel fuel tank is lined.

Check out this kit:
ITP 7.3L Fuel Tank / Pre-Pump Kit

VERY nice kit, and you can get it without the spin-on filter for less than half price. That's what I did, and put my own pre-filter inline.

Is your tank galvanized or regular steel? The lining will protect it, but do some research. Galvanized is a no-no with diesel due to the Zinc as Clux mentioned.

And to the OP, eliminating the white plastic thing (mixing chamber) is fine as long as you add some type of filtration between the tank and the pump.

Wrong.. get ahold of Ed at partsguyed.com

He can get you the black piece. It was around $30 shipped.

I superglued mine back together and it has been holding for 30k..

If for some reason you can't get one from Ed.. I have one sitting in my shop still.

You really don't *need* it. I'm looking at dumping the whole pickup and going with just a 1/2" or 5/8ths tube, no pickup umbrella.

I used SS brake line. Got it at Napa. Should be found at any auto parts store. About 5 to 8 bucks per pre-packaged length depending on diameter.
