Need some quick help guys. I went to start my truck on Saturday(2006 F250 6.0) and my starter was completely sheared off except for one bolt(which was bent).
Heard back from the shop -- they have to replace the starter and drill out the bolts. This is not covered under the 100K mile warranty as it is not an internal lubricated item.
My problem is that this is such a huge failure of the product, as it has sheared off the truck. If it were an altenator going out or a bad lead or something, I would understand. But not the entire product ripping off of the engine.
I need some help from you all. Any suggestions. They are saying $600 plus to replace. If I have to go and tow it out to another shop it is basically going to be the same price.
sounds like the bolts just gave out. This is not a real problem issue but can happen. Yes they will need to drill out the bolts, re-thread the holes and most likey they will end up changing bolts sizes too.
The starter may have been bad as the reason the bolts gave way so replacing that is a good idea.
$600 bucks is pricy but there are several things that they are doing.
Acutally the frame of the starter where the holes are was sheared also. One is torn off, one is cracked and one is still good. I am trying to find out more resolution from the dealer.
Kind of sounds like the bolts were never torqued properly in the first place. The loose connection allowed the starter to move and placed a lot of stress on the bolts and starter mounting flange when the motor ran. The weakest link failed and then everything went wrong.
I'll bet those bolts come right out without too much problem. Forget paying $600 for the dealer to do the job. Go to a different shop and save yourself a lot of money. This is actually a do-it-yourself job if you have the proper bolt extraction tool.
I received word this mornging that ford is not going to cover even part of it. I am kind of stuck. If I have it towed to another shop, which would save me about $200, but the tow will cost around $150. I don't have the tool, but could rent one. What really sucks is then I would have to send it right back to the dealer to see if EGR problems are going on again. This would be the 3rd time. Just really not happy with the truck right now. I have had it a year and maybe have had it 50% of the time not in the shop.(ac accumulator, head gaskets twice, 3 egrs, 2 coolers, 1 wreck)
Been a Ford fan for 30 years and just really unhappy now.

That's what I was thinking. Either under OR overtorqued when installed. If the starter had ever been removed, think twice about letting the person who installed it touch your truck in the future.
And if the starter had been removed since it came from the factory, your problem is the fault of the installer, not the truck or manufacturer. Doesn't ease the sting much, but at least puts the focus of the anger where it belongs.
