I had my garage recently replace my unit bearing assembly in the front left after locking up on me. We replaced it with the expensive NAPA assembly and all went good. Last night i happened to notice that a stud was sheared off and wondered how it happened. I had the truck on a short trip (15 mile) and on my way back it sounded like the wheel was going to fall off. Sure enough when i got home, 4 studs were completly sheared off at the base of the bearing assembly, how could this possibly happen? Is the part junk? Did my garage forget the tighten the lugs to the right spec? Im going to talk to them on Monday and go from there, Thanks!
Any time you see anything out of place with a wheel "stud was sherred off" ALWAYS recheck the rest of the studs and wheels. It's not what happens when the wheel comes off your truck that's the problem, it's what the wheel hits wile it's flying down the road at 60 MPH.
Even when torqued properly I have had stud nuts come loose after a short time. I always check mine after 25 and 50 miles just to make sure that they remain tight.
Almost sounds like something was behind the rim when it was put on the hub and it was over tightened to make the wheel roll straight. maybe the hub it's self was warped when it was made. I would hate to think that there is a bad bunch of wheel stud that passed QC and were installed. That would be a liability law suit, but there is no way to find out if this is happening elsewhere.
