I know this is a really old thread. I know why they had such a low air cleaner on the 300. I mounted a 272 Y block air cleaner on top of my 300 with Carter YF in my 56. - Looks old... But I have broken off the threaded stud 3 times! Apparently the engine shakes back and forth especially when starting and it fatigues the 7/16" stud, then
breaks off...., 1st time just threaded rod, figured that wasn't strong enough, so got a actual carb stud, that broke off, then back to threaded rod with a tube around it- Today that broke off. I'm gonna have to figure out a different air cleaner! Anyone got a 67 or so 300 air cleaner for sale? Thanks Greg.
Are you using the tear drop type that is shown in the pictures or something else?
Post up a picture or 2 and maybe we can come up with something that will work with what you got or something that looks like it belongs on the motor of that age.
Dave ----
Did the factory 6 filter use a band clamp under the lower part that clamped the top of the carb?
Was it also a oil bath?
I dont know if the top of the cab is wide enough for some type of band clamp to work with the stud?
Only other thing I got is to make a bracket that would fasten to the base, nut & bolt type deal? and then to the motor like a intake stud that would have a nut to tighten the intake and then a washer / nut for the bracket?
Or maybe to a valve cover stud set up like the intake stud and 2 nuts?
Just something to support the base / filter from shaking so much along with the top stud.
I know of someone that took a later v2 base that would fit his Snapper EFI TB and welded it to the base of his 300 carb six filter as he wanted it to look factory stock.
If the carb top has enough lib for a clamp type on the filter base you might have to make a base to work like he did.
Good looking truck and that filter dose fit right in
Good luck

Thanks again, Dave. I think what I'm gonna try is welding up a special stud. I'm thinkin a triangle lookin thing. It wont show with air cleaner on anyway. No there's no clamp. as is it just uses a 1/4" stud threaded on both ends- bottom threads in carb "bridge", top has wing nut on top of air cleaner. When I put this heap together I kept all the old parts, I took the ugly original air filter that was real low and very " 80's " looking, and cut the center out of it. Then took the Y block air filter bottom and pop riveted the bottom of the 85 to the Yblock- which also raised the air cleaner another 3/8" or so. I think I can get a stud and use a old "bridge" off a junk carb and weld diagonals up close to top of stud...??
