i have a 2003 f-350 6.0l early this week it started acting like it was out of fuel the tank was low the fuel light just came on but it was not out of fuel i put 5gals.in it started and would run but not for long i managed to get to a gas station and put 10 gals in at first still acted the same but then it ran fine added more fuel and it ran for the rest of the week. but yesterday once agian just as the fuel light came on it started acting the same. i took the fuel/water drain plug out fuel ran out like normal.took the lower fuel filter out to check it.put the filter back but left the plug out turned ignition on the pump sounded like it was working but no fuel came out of the drain hole. so i put the plug back in dumped 5gal. fuel in started at first but stopped and now will not start so could it be the pump or something else any advise thanks .2003 f-350 4x4 178,000 miles
I had the same issue "maybe". I was on 4 near Daytona with a 26ft boat, truck had the running out of fuel feel, but I had a qtr tank. AAA tow and a $100 for the boat. Mechanic said I was out of fuel-fuel bowl was empty.
The plastic pick-up fell off the pick-up tube and would not empty the last 6-7 gals from the tank. Hose clamped it back on. Could be something else, keep 5 gals extra in a can and run it down again. Hope I helped. If you pull the tank, check the TANK HARPOONIG posts. I think that the fuel is out off the lines and you may have to cycle the key quite a few times to fill the fuel system. Thats just a guess though.

Reason: added info
I'm not an expert on this stuff, but I know sometimes that any close answer is good, kinda gets the brain working. I would fill the upper fuel bowl, and give it a go, I would do that a few times. I hope some one else can give some other suggestion. Good Luck
I'm running into the same deal on a work truck here an 03 F-350 6.0 and it keeps blowing the fuel pump fuse. Everything sounds the same as yours though.
I suggest you don't let it get to that point until you figure out your problem. Starving the injectors is very bad for them, and at almost $400 apiece this can get quite costly.

This can not be emphasized enough! Good post Tim.
Most folks will say = #1 mod is a coolant filter. I would have to say a close second is a fuel pressure gauge.
This is probably NOT the problem, but..... The mechanic who recently replaced my HPOP told me of a problem that he thought he had only seen on 2 or 3 F-450's where a coating inside the fuel tank was delaminating from the tank and blocking the fuel pick-up. It was a problem that would seem to go away when the tank was fairly full, or perhaps when the truck sat overnight, and come back as you ran the fuel level down some. Again, this is probably not your problem, but you never know, I thought I'd throw it out just in case.

Might be possible Mike (and good to see you posting again)!

I thought that issue only effected the chassis-cab trucks that had the fuel tank behind the rear axle? I don't remember the details, but almost all the trucks run plastic tanks...who's to say the other chassis trucks couldn't have the same issue?? With that said...who's to say he's not getting crap blocking the fuel pick up? I'd check the tank/fuel pick-up before I went much further...HUEI injectors are too @#$% expensive to just burn up because the truck was starved of fuel.
Not trying to hi-jack the thread and I can start a new thread if it is getting offensive...but the 03 F-350 work truck that I am dealing with was a cab and chassis with the tank behind the axle. And I have had one tech tell me to check the fuel pickup. But another one told me that the fuel pump could be going bad or a wiring problem in between, because this truck keeps blowing the fuel pump fuse.
