10-12 is what you will set it too with the advance unhooked at idle. The 36-38 is the total when you are driving down the road and have the advanced hooked up.

Wrong.
Initial is correct, this is set at idle, VACUUM advance disconnected and plugged.
TOTAL advance is the mechanical advance built into the distributor. Initial + Mechanical = TOTAL
Vacuum advance ADDS to mechanical. Which is why initial can be 10, total can be 38 and vacuum can be over 50 if you aren't carefull.
I will admit my explination of total advance wasn't great but I said correctly explained how to set the initial and I really doubt he is going to check the total.

I usually don't worry about initial timing unless it won't crank easily (too advanced). I start at 35 at 3000 rpm and then check for pinging. If there is pinging back it off a bit or if not advance it some more and then curve the distributor so most of the timing comes in before 2500 and don't run a vacuum advance, has worked great for many many years.
