I have just bought a 300 straight six, and am curious as to how I can tell what year and type of truck it came from. What numbers cast into the block will help me out?
Because if you do you will answer it for yourself (The numbers cast in the block will help you out!) What are they in other words? Look just to the right of the water pump when facing it. There may be some die stamped numbers there. Otherwise, check the casting numbers down by the starter. Post what you find...no promises, but let's see what develops.

The numbers lead me to conclude an 80's model engine but I suspect you knew that much. Unfortunately, I have no resources for those years. So I cant help much. The other area for numbers I mentioned to you would be above the timing cover and to the right of the water pump when facing it. There should be a little exposed area on the block which has numbers stamped into it not cast. Check that spot. It may have a date code at least then you'd have a year.

I knew it was an '80s model, but determining a closer year would ease my curiousity. It probably isn't a big deal since I have an approximate time frame, but still would like to know.
Get your scraper and some cleaner and concentrate on that little area I mentioned previously; you might also look on the bottom of the block with the oil pan removed on the gasket sealing surface up in the front.
Have fun.
