carb on 351w
My? is, how come sometimes when i start this engine it goes into a rough idle and dosen't have the power it should both on take off and on the highway, then other times it runs really good, i have checked to see if the filter is clogged dosen't seem to be, i let idle till it shut down and then i pulled the top off the carb to check if it was starving itself but there was gas in the float bowl, i did hear a sucking sound when i removed the carb top is that normal?, outside temperture does not seem to make a difference, any more help or ideas? thanks for your help.

First, verify the PCV valve is the correct one for the appl.& clean out all the hoses and passages associated with it.Second,there is a forgotten gasket under the EGR Spacer Plate{under carb,before intake}that should be changed each time you loosen the carb because it gets brittle from the heat in that area.Third,hook a timing light to #1 and view the pulses while idling and accelerating,there should be no interuptions.Let it idle and see if you loose pulses{spark}while it shuts down on its own.This will indicate module or coil wire failure.
