I got a 1990 F150, thinkin of puttin either a 351C or a 460 out of a econoline van.
The truck is gonna be a complete resto, im strippin her down to the frame, and startin over.
Couple questions,
1. Its standard tranny, would that fit the 351 or 460 off a 302?
2. What do you think would be better, i dont wanna go super fast, but i wouldnt mind gettin 300+ HP out of her
3. I heard the 460 doesnt rev high enough to get the good power and speed, without doing alot of mods to it,
4. Also heard that the 351C smallblock would prob be the best bet, since it is a higher reving engine.
Lemme know what you guys think, and I look forward to talkin bout trucks with you guys!!!
well she has a 302, and the trucks been in the family since 1992, so i know how it was driven, right now its at a cousins camp as a workin truck, but im gonna get it back since he isnt usin it no more.
im thinkin more on the line of either boring out the 302 I have, or gettin a 351c but the 460 is an option, cuz my buddy has one lyin in his barn
How big is the truck , long bed ? Extra cab ? 4X4 ? the 302s are easy to build because they have a big aftermarket support because everything they make for the 5.0 mustang , if you need alot of low end then the 460 would be good ....Lew
You can search the froums about the 351c , i wouldn't rule out the 351w , it will bolt right in & has the same afermarket support the 302 has & its got about 50 more cubes
The 460 will require a completely different trans, driveshaft and axle, and with the 351c you'll be limited to a carbed setup and will have to do a bunch of custom work to mount it and make it operational. The 302 can produce close to 300hp with little more than a cam and exhaust but the 351w will bolt right in and produce more torque. You will also have the option of keeping EFI or using a carb with either of these small block motors.
well if u dont mind doing alot of modifieing then how about the Triton V10? i have thaught about it.... and if my 302 blows then thats what im gunna use
Actually, the 351C will drop right in, as it used the Windsor motor mounts and bellhousing, but as Paul said above, you'd be restricted to either a carburetor or custom EFI. And although the Cleveland is considered a powerhouse for its size because of the cylinder head design, I too think you'd be ahead a good bit of money if you chose a Windsor, Supermarkers. It's not that the Cleveland doesn't have a good bit of aftermarket support; it's more that the price for equivalent Windsor pieces is way cheaper.
But as far as a 460 being a low-revving engine...sure it is, in stock form. I wouldn't rule one out! There's lots of torque to be had down low. But again, if you go the big block route, you're gonna be paying coming and going...getting good parts for a BBF ain't cheap, and then when you've got it built, you're gonna be paying at the gas station.
All in what you want to do...hope this wishy-washy reply helps!

Yeah, I think im prob gonna go with the 351w, i can find one easy, its gonna be like a sunday driver, or goin out to the movies truck, wont be my everyday driver
