T-19 question

Curious, does the T-19 have to have a IH bellhousing/bolt pattern to fit the 6.9 or does the bigblock 460 bellhousing fit the IH as well?

Just curious here....never been a big fan of auto transmissions, wondering if it would be easy enough to find a 4-speed to swap in.

as always, TIA

The t19 is sepapate from the bellhoising, but you do have to have a diesel bellhousing the 46o one won't work.

id never go with anything besides the zf5 or E40D if i was replacing anyway.
the overdrive is worth its weight in gold.
personally,i was so sick and tired of manual trucks (so tired of shifting) and replacing clutches/throw out bearings, etc.one of the must haves was auto or id pass it buy.

What do you do to the clutches. I have broken the bellhousing twice, and scattered the slave cylinder over the road at a red light in soccoro once but have never had a clutch go bad.

I would die right about now for any manual tranny. I have no luck with the stupid autos.

well,iv always bought used trucks half wore out.(this ones the best used truck iv ever gotten.)
also, these where f150 trucks, being used for heavy duty purposes.so i don't blame those clutches going.
iv never had a manual truck that didn't go through at least 1 clutch etc.
the last one tho, with that weak mazda 5 kinda dont count.man, that was used hard pulling more than she was ever made for.two or 3 clutches before she hit 200k miles.replaced it once-didnt know better to put the zf5 in it at the time, tho didn't matter much, the truck was falling apart from working like an f350 daily worker for 8 years lol,so i had to finally break down and get the right rig.
mostly,iv always had manual shift trucks.i just got so sick of shifting.
the diesel trucks like this with so much torque,im sure you don't have to shift so often as the little 300-I6's iv gotten used to,nor wear out clutches as often.but i so bad wanted a change of pace.it had to be the E40D.
i just hope it works out good,so i wont have to put a 5 speed in.if i can get 75k-100k miles per E40D while working her hard,i'l be happy.

Thanx Joe

Guess my next question is would the transmission itself have to be from a diesel or would one from any 4x4 work?

Don't kill me here, but I know on Chevy's any 4x4 manual transmission will work with almost any engine as the input shafts are the same with the occasional clutch sizes being the only deal.
Dodge manual transmissions had to be from a specific engine: big block had bigger input shafts than the small blocks, and of course the cummins diesel has it's own shaft as well.

To put it simpler:
If I hit the boneyard and find a T-19 4x4 transmission, will it work behind the 6.9 provided I attain the correct bellhousing/clutch/flywheel etc?

This isn't something I'm going to run out and do tomorrow mind you, just curious what all would be involved/needed. I already know the pedals/coloumn, linkages, etc

Who knows, I may even keep my C-6 depending how good it shifts going down the road lol

Thanx

Yes you can put any cast iron ford 4spd behind the diesel bellhousing and if you find one with a 205 the the tCase will be bullet proof.

And thanx Milt, that's what I needed to know. Got a buddy with a couple ford 4-speeds sitting in his barn, I know one is 4x4 but not sure what the others are.

Think I'll try trackin him down this weekend and see what all he does have

You will have to have one for a 4X4 And if I'm not mistaken you can use the Tcase you have. The gas trannys have a lot lower 1st and reverse gear and wider splits but 4th is the same as the diesel tranny. I have a 79 model 4spd and 205 I am saving for when I swap an IDI into my wrecker, I like the gas gears so I can ease around. I also have a gas 4spd for my dually, but may do a ZF5 swap in it so I can have a double over and get up into the numbers like David 85. lol

Yep, has to a be a 4x4 tranny unless I want to run a divorced t-case, and that I don't want to get into. Wouldn't be too bad mind you, but extending drive shafts, linkages and fabbing a cross member is a little more than I want to get into right now.

Granted, if I still had my garage with the mig, bandsaw and everything I may tackle that job, but now all I have is a nice set of tools....no "equipment" anymore

Pretty sure the transmissions my buddy has are all from gassers....1 is from his dads 3/4-ton, his spare was from a 1/2-ton and no clue where the third came from.

Should be geared good for a plow/work truck though.....

Dave actually likes the diesel tranny with the hifher 1st and reverse for plowing, because he backs up so much. I like the gas trannys because I can idle off with any load without touching the gas, also for when I am running around in the mountains.

yeah, can see why the diesel tranny would be better....

I'm used to the granny chevy transmissions (sm465) that has the ultra-low 1st and reverse. Not much for fuel mileage, but like you said, can crawl all day with any size load/weight on her

I dunno, will see what he has and go from there. Like I said, may just stay with my C-6 and collect pieces parts for the future swap.
