Drivers Side Brake Light

Electrical idiot. Have a problem with the drivers side brake light. I have power all the way to the bulb contact, but light will not come on. Tried running a ground from the light casing to a nut on the frame still doesn't work. Driving me crazy. Any ideas would help. Truck is a 71-F100.
Thanks Dan

Have you tried another bulb? Un plug and reconnect the wire below the housing.

Thanks John
I cleaned the contacts on the pigtails and bulb contacts and replace the bulbs. the bulb contacts read between 11-12 on the meter.

Sounds like you have covered the basics such as power in and ground of housing, but have you cleaned the interior of the socket itself? That's where the ground originates, especially through the little pins on the bulb.I use a shotgun barrel brush{brass type} to clean the socket. It also helps to scrape the "pocket" that the pins fall into after you twist the bulb in.And don't forget there is only one way for the 1157 bulb to go in,allthough you can put in in upside down very easily{low pin, higher pin}.
Good luck,
Phillip

I'll try the shotgun brush. Sounds like the perfect tool. I thought I cleaned them pretty good though. I will also check the bulb.

Sounds like you have a cooroded connection somewhere in the power circuit. You can measure the voltage but as soon as you put a load on the circuit, like a lightbulb, all the voltage is dropped on the corroded connection.
Start at the bulb and trace the wires back checking all the connectors for corrosion. Also look for cracks or chaffes in the wire covering this is also a good place for the wire to corrode.
To check if your ground is good attach another battery's positive post to the positive wire to your light and the negative post to the truck frame. The light will come on if the truck ground circuit is good.
Also I have seen in later model trucks 73-79 where the turn signal switch is the culprit as the power circuit goes thru it.
Good luck in fixing it. Electrical gremlins are a pain.

Dan, Do you have someone to help with pressing the brake pedel. I have converted to power brakes, so I cranked the truck got a 2X4 against the seat to hold the pedal down and could turn the switch on and off to test. I could get power sometimes but could not lite the lamp. I sprayed carb cleaner, in the socket, every thing that I knew. I unpluged the connector cleaned it, pulled the wire from the other side, and the last time I put it back together it worked and is still working. Sometimes they are just hemmoriods. (pain in the ***)

I had the same problem it drove me nuts for 3 days I traced it to the blinker switch. By the way mine is a 72F100 just so you would know it does hapen to vehicles older than 73.

Good Luck
