I HAVE A 79 FORD F 150 PICKUP. I HAD THE ALTERNATOR CHK'D AND THE STARTER CHK'D WHICH BOTH SHOWED TO BE BAD. WHEN I TURN ON THE SWITCH IT CLICKS SOUND LIKE ITS COMING FROM THE STARTER . WHAT COULD MY PROMBLEM BE.
Sounds like you could have a dead battery. The sound you hear is probably the starter solenoid clicking.
Check the voltage at the battery it should read a little over 12 volts and only drop to 9v or so when the starter is turning.
Also check all the positive and negative connections for the battery wires. At the battery, at the starter solenoid, at the starter for the positive wire and at the battery and at the block for the negative wire.
Also check to make sure the starter to engine block mating surfaces are clean as the starter gets it ground from the mounting surfaces.
Good luck.
First, get yourself a $12 solenoid and replace it. This should fix the problem. You may have been duped into buying a starter and alternator too if the school boys down at the parts counter didn't know what they were doing with the test equipment. Its happened to me.
I own a '79 F150 and have heard the same clicking of the solenoid. The good news is that you now have a new electrical system and it probably didn't cost an arm & leg either. Aren't American trucks and cars great!
