Hi all!
Just got back from inspection and had to have my left rear emergency brake cable replaced along with rear brake pads. After going thru his records,my mechanic found I had this cable replaced twice before.Once in 2006,in 2008, and now in 2010.Was wondering if anyone had any ideas, info or insight into this. The cable just gets frozen up for some reason. He used a Raybestos cable each time.Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
do you have rear disc breaks? if so, the cable runs to the back of the assembly and there is a metal peice that acts like a teter totter. the cable pulls on one end and the other end pushes the brakes. what happens a lot of the time is this metal piece seizes and it gets over looked. this will wear out the e brake pads and keep the cable from moving very far. one side will do this and the other side may still work. if i were you i would take a look at this just in case... it happened to my dads 150. and i dont think it was a good design. of course if you dont have rear discs, this is pointless for you.lol
Hey!
No my back brakes are drum brakes.I've emailed Raybestos but haven't gotten a reply yet.The front end of the cable is exposed but the cable itself is wrapped in plastic lining,so we don't know why it keeps freezing up.I've researched the part online and found most are warrantied for 3 months,so maybe 2 years is the best I'm going to get.The only other problem is when it sticks,it causes my brake pads to wear out quicker so they need replaced more often. Thanks for still trying to help!
idk about that particular brand... but i have seen cables like you describe. it doesnt make sense to me why they would keep freezing up like that unless somehow the plastic lining wears off but i really doubt its that. i am sorry i cant be any help to your situation. i will make one last sugestion tho if the company doesnt come through for you. idk, maybe you have done this, but get a can of silicone spray and everytime you think about it just soak every exposed part of the cable that you can. or maybe use sime of that lithium grease. who knows??? maybe it will help some. good luck and i hope you find a better solution thang changing the cable every two years.
Yeah,I've been trying to think of ways to avoid this problem. The silicone and lithium sound good.I may have to apply it every so often.I've also been trying to think of a way to cover the exposed end,but haven't come up with anything yet.I do think if it happens again,I will try another brand. Thanks for your input and ideas!
