Should be no problem, should be good for 500 -800 lbs maybe more. Subtract your trucks real weight from the GVRW listed on your door tag to get how much you are allowed to safely carry.

I have a similar question. I am hoping some one can answer it in pounds or fractional tons. I live in NJ and I hunt. In the fall of 2010 it looks like we will have a black bear season again with our new governer. Since there have been only two bear seasons in almost 40 years there are several bears running around that are estimated at 600lbs and perhaps more. So my question is exactly how much weight can I put in the bed without damaging the suspension. Bear (no pun intended) in mind that the truck will be travileling in 4WD low range on unimproved dirt roads.

I picked up a used Porsche engine (3.0 L) for my racecar and carried it in the back with no problem. I would estimate that it weighed about 350 to 400 #'s.

I carried it at the back of the bed so if I carried it more towards the front I think I would have been able to carry even more.

On the bear question don't you field dress your kill before dragging it any where?

I wouldn't worry too much. I have personally carried over 1800 pounds in paving stones in my FX4. The rear was low but not bottomed. The handling was a bit wishy-washy, so I drove like my granny, but there was no damage. It's probably not something I'd do on a daily basis, but I'd not shrink from doing it again if needed. Your 4L truck has the 8.8" rear end which is considered "heavy-duty" in a Ranger.

That includes the passengers as well.

I remember reading in the F-150 forum here that some of the new trucks were at or near their GVWR with just a couple of people in their crew cabs...

Your fine ive put up to 1000 pounds in the bed of my truck. I do tree work and i had oak logs all the way up to bed rails. The truck was doing wheelies all the way home but braking and handling was not really effected much. Dont worry about it you will be just fine with you engine and tranny.

How exciting to be able to bear hunt again!! I wish you good luck.
Your truck should do just fine with hauling out a bear, but are you going to haul anything else...dogs, truck bed kennels, camping gear.
I have hauled very heavy loads in my truck while cutting firewood, and a loaded 4x6 trailer. I would only buck up Tan Oak and Madrone into 6 foot lengths, but loaded up my bed (with a high Brauma camper shell) until if was FULL, then heaped the trailer full and diamond hitched the load down. I had to crawl out of the canyon in 4 wheel low 1st gear for the 1st 20 miles, then 20 miles through the Redwood country of Del Norte County in NORTHERN, Ca
(8 hours drive north on SF) and right on the coast. I've never really hunted bear, but have run into my share in the woods.
What county are you going to hunt in....please share you exciting plans in further detail!!!!!
