I have a 78 F150 4x4 with a 400 engine in it. Driving it too work one day, I saw the gauge reading hot. When I shut the engine off though it did not give the symptoms of a hot engine. There was no steam trying to escape or nothing. I changed the thermostat twice and the temp sending unit. It still kept saying it was hot. I changed the water pump and still had the problem so I took the thermostat out. It does not heat anymore but I live in Colorado so in the mornings I get a pretty chilly ride. My Dad told me it could be a blown head gasket or cracked head. There is no water in the oil or any sign of loss of water. Any help would be appreciated. THANK YOU
You need to put the thermostat back in and when it shows hot again check the radiator hoses to see if one is collapsing, and restricting the flow of coolant. next backwash the radiator with the garden hose from the engine side to clean out all the junk that collects there, and then flush out the cooling system, if you haven't already done that. also chek the timing and set it if its not correct. lots of little things like these added together can make a truck run hot.
Are you sure that the gauge is accurate, and that the I.V.R. isn't giving up the ghost? The Instrument voltage regulator will make the gauges act up if it's crappin out.
I think I fixed the problem. I changed to a 180 degree thermostat instead of the 195 degree. I also went to NAPA and got the thermostat unlike the other that I got from Checker auto parts. The gauge still reads on the higher side when the pickup is running normally though. Thanks for all your help. LaVerl
