I have a 61 F100, 223, 3 speed on the column. My speedometer is broke, the gears in the transmission are good, and there's tension on the needle...how do I fix it?
try removing the cable from the dash panel and start the truck to see if the cable turns on the inside. cable may be broke, the speedo that goes into the tranny is plastic and is usually the culprit but at this age it could be either or both. could also be in the dash panel. but check the easy stuff first. dutch
Had a problem with my speedo not working recently. Cable was good, gear that goes into transmission appeared good at first glance. Turns out it was stripped out where the cable plugs into the square hole in the speedo gear. New gear solved the problem.
another hint, when you have the speedo off to check it you can hook a drill directly to the cable and see if it show s up on the dash panel. if the speedometer shows a mph then it'll be the speedo or in the trans. itself.

There are four possibilities:
1) The gears inside the speedometer's head have stripped. Take it to a speedometer shop and have the gears replaced, or buy a used or NOS speedometer.
2) The DRIVEN gear at the end of the cable is stripped, replace with a new gear. If plastic, it's available from Ford for less than 4 bucks. If fiber (some are on trucks of this vintage), post the number of teeth on it, I'll see if I can find a NOS replacement, as all are obsolete.
3) The DRIVE gear on the output shaft has stripped. It could have 6,7, or 8 teeth. Whatever it is, it's obsolete. The DRIVE gear could be plastic, it could be steel. IWhatever it is, I might be able to find a NOS replscement, as all are obsolete;
4) Inside the speedo cable's housing is a woven steel core. It's supposed to be greased every so often, but most ppl are unaware of this. When the grease dries out, the core binds up inside the housing...and snaps into two pieces. Autoparts stores sell a "Universal" woven steel core kit. You cut it to length, coat it with a fine film of white lithium grease, install in the housing.
