If you have a nine inch rear end, pull your axles out, count the splines, run down to the salvage yard, pick up another center section with the appropriate splines and gear ratio, and put it back in your housing! Don't forget the grease and new axle seals! Should take from two to six hours and run from 25 to 200 bucks.(Price depends on gear ratio, spline count, and posi or open differential.
Little Boss, If your rear came in the truck, you will have a 28 spline, the 32 were for HP use only. There should be a tag on the front of the gear with the ratio number. A rule of thumb: V8 SD will have a 3:25 in it, a I6 SD 3.75, a V8 auto 3.00. That can varie, but is close.
When you get your new gear, get 3qts. of gear oil and at least 3 cans of carb cleaner to clean up everything, and a new gasket. There are no bearings to change on a 9 in. Lift your truck and put it on stands, remove the wheels and the 4 bolts through the hole on the axle. My axles came easy. Pull them about 3in. Pull your chunk, and clean the cavatity with the carb cleaner. Clean your new chunk the same way. Make sure that all of the old gasket is off, put the new chunk in and remove the big nut on the other side and fill it until the grease runs out. Replace everything and try out your new ratio. If you have everything before you start, you should be able to do this in an hour and a half. I didn't replace the axle seals and so far everything is OK, no leaks.
