I have a 2001 F150 4 x 4 with the 7700 lb. package, regular cab, 8' box and a 5.4 L engine. There are 75,000 mi. on the truck. I am replacing the universal joints in the rear driveshaft. The problem I am having, is that I can't get both bearing cup retaining clips in on the yolk for the short front splined shaft that slides into the transmission. I have used a clamp to bring both cups together, but there's still not enough room. I can get the clip into one side, but not the other. If I center them in the yolk, I cannot get a clip in either side. The U-joints are Federal Mogul and I wonder if they're out of spec. or if anyone else has had problems with them.
Yep, you've got to be sure those needle bearing stay in their place.
That happened to me once, and I thought I was going crazy.
Also be sure you don't pack it with grease prior to installation, lube it after it is installed in the yokes. Too much grease can also cause this problem.
Thanks guys, that was the problem. I put the roller back in place and put the cup on the shaft and it did it again! Then I put more grease in the cup and spread it around evenly to hold the rollers in place better. All went well after that. I appreciate the help.
LOL yep been there. After that's mastered it's a gravy money maker, front axle joints were a big money maker too, get em for ball joints too almost every time on those crappy twin i beam axle Fords.
