Hi! I am rebuilding my 74F250 4WD. I have completly rebuilt the brakes and am ready to add fluid. My question is seeing as I am basicly starting over new master cyl.,brake cyl.,even new tubing is it OK to switch to DOT 5 brake fluid? I am under the impression that it has superior qualities to DOT 3, is this true? Will it ruin the rubber seals/pistons? Is this a good idea or am I asking for truouble?

If my understanding of these are correct, the dot 5 fluid has a higher boiling point as compared to a dot 3 or 4. But the dot 5 is much more likely to NOT absorb moisture, it just collects at the lowest point in the system, and rusts there. I also know that you should not mix these two types. The dot 3/4 will absorb moisture but it stays "mixed" with the fluid. Hopefully someone can add a little more on this subject. Chuck P.
Dot five brake fluid is silicone based that is why it dosent absorb moisture it is safe to use in your system as long as you dont mix it with dot 3 or 4 because the fluid will break down and not function properly and cause problems.
Dot 5 break fluid isn't only better than 3 or 3/4 for system use. It also won't take paint off or soften paint like the others will. I know this cuz I run dot 4 in my HOG and have spilled much on my paint with no loss to the paint job. Also on the other # of fluid ( 3) that works well for cleaning up the dirty spark plug wires. Just put a little in rag and wipe them down.

I Don't have a spare Wide Glide layin around the shop although I would love to put Cerriani inverted front forks on my wifes bike eventually; she only has a single disk setup. I live in Alaska so there aren't a lot of bikes from which to scrounge parts from, although we have a high number of riders per capita.
