Getting more air

My 90' IDI spews at times black smoke like it isn't getting enough air. I just put new injectors in it and I replaced the IP not so long ago, so I'm fairly confident it has something to do with not getting enough air. I'm kicking around putting a reusable air filter in it, but I don't think this will fully get me where I want to be. The motor has 165000 or so miles on it, so I really don't want to turbo it. What I'm thinking about doing is getting an electric fan mounted at the front and building a rubber or plastic shield/tube around it going right into the air filter can. I found a 16" 3000 cfm electric fan. I was going to wire it with a toggle switch to turn it on when needed for extra air. Has anyone tried this before, and has anyone had any success doing something like this?

I can't see that doing much but you can Either turn the fuel down or play with the timing or it may need both. You should be able to get rid of the smoke without loosing performance

The IP I put on about 20000 miles ago has never had the fuel turned up, so it should still be factory. Not only am I getting black smoke like it's under a huge load, it doesn't have the power it should have either. I timed it when I put the pump on, and I didn't remove the pump when I put the new injectors in it. I've been around diesel all my life, and it has all the symptoms of one of two things: 1) the timing is retarded 2) it's not getting enough air. For the life of me, I can't imagine how/why the timing would be off.

It's a 90'. When I say timed, I mean lining up the timing gear. I've never had it to a shop where they actually tilted the IP for is it static timing?

you have to time the ip not just the gears. also when you change the injectors it can change the timing.

so you are going to make a homemade turbo?? please tell me you are kidding! The fan will not be able to force air into the system, it will take in what it can. It isnt starved for air, it has too much fuel. It needs to be timed professionally, gears will get you to the shop so it can be timed correctly.

You would be the first.

2 things to think about.

How many CFM does a 7.3 take? ( will it help or restrict it more)

How will you get it so it is not a blockege when the fan is off?

A buddy of mine has his own garage where he is a professional mechanic, he has been toying around with such stuff in his spare time on a couple yard trucks and its surprising what a leaf blower will do. lol. The hair dryer...well you can put your mouth over the inlet and blow more air into the system but the leaf blower shows some promise. Of corse its hard to tell when you are sitting in the yard but he turned the fuel up on one to the point it was belching black smoke and added the leaf blower and it revved quicker and the black smoke disapeared. I don't know that much about these small Diesel's but it impressed me. lol. He is trying to figure out a way to mount it so that he can take it for a road test but he works so slow on his toys.

Turbo charger.

Even a leaf blower pushes MAYBE 3-4 lbs of boost.

There are electric turbochargers available, buttt.......

I don't know what a leaf blower puts out but he played with it to get max air flow too. I'm wondering how he'll supply the air when its needed but after seeing some of the stuff he's conjured I know better than to doubt him. He's one of those guys that dream up something and build it from nothing. I don't think its practical but its his time.
