Replacing double cardan joint.....

what is really in the ball? in my truck shop put a u joint in the cardan they had it part and i think parts are missing in mine u-joint burn t out again, when i took it apart thiers the ball a seal,spring and what look like two washers is this right or am i missing parts? also should you replace both u joints in the cardan at the same time and if so why?
