I have a 1985 ford f-150 that has a 351w, c6 tranny, 9" rear end with 4.11 gears. I was driving down the road and it was like you threw the tranny into neutral, i checked the fluid and the linkage, and the transfer case and no problem there. so i was wondering if there is a valve or something causing this, or if this has happened to annyone else before. anny feedback would be great, thanks
Pull the tranny dipstick and look at the fluid. It should be pink(new fluid), or dark red(older fluid). If it's a light brown and stinks like it's burnt, you should pull the pan and change the fluid and the filter.
After you pull the pan, see how much junk is in the bottom of the pan. A fine metal dust in the bottom of the pan is normal. Large chunks are not normal, and you may need a rebuild.
check the vaccume line from the intake to the lsteel line going to the trans, and check it from the steel line to the modual at the back of the trans above the crossmember
Put the rear end up on jack stands, have somebody "drive" it, crawl under there and see
what you can see while they do that. Although it's unlikely given your description, there's
always the possibility of the rear end having a problem.

My first thought was 'broken axle'
When my axle broke, it was just like the truck went into neutral.
