I replaced my passenger side hub on my ride. Read all the great threads on front ends and alot of posters helped with info. I need to replace my driver side next. Question is when I had my hub off should my axle move around when I grabbed the end of it. I greased everything and notice it moved quite a bit. Also on the tire side of the u joint I have a round gasket that is hanging on both passenger and driver side. I know this gasket has to go somewhere. It shouldn't have come from the axle housing since it cannot fit over the yokes holding the u joint.
The axles do move around, they are not quite as rigid as you would think they should be. As for your gasket that is hanging, the only seal that I can think of is the round seal that presses onto the stub axle shaft. If that seal is not intact it will allow moisture into your hub area and sieze everything eventually.
On my truck, I had to replace the seals on both sides. The inner bearing that the stub shaft rides in and the hub lockouts both completely siezed up. Luckily, I did not have to replace the wheel bearings yet. Just be aware if you need to replace those seals, they are about $40 a piece and are very easy to destroy if you do not have an installation tool. I took my axles to the local dealer and they pressed the seals on for about $20, it's a little pricey when you watch how they do it, but it beats buying another seal.
The pic of the seals has what I see hanging. I you look at the seal that is on the motorcraft box, the top part is what is hanging. So I guess the seal has seperated somehow. At least part is still in.
Is the inner bearing replaceable without replacing the complete hub assy?
If so, does anyone know the part number for the inner bearing?
My truck is a 2000 F250 PSD.
Yes, they can be replaced without buying the hub assembly and for a much less amount of cash. I do not know the part number, sorry. I got my mine at NAPA.
