Dirty filter, problems?

I am in the process of cleaning my filter bowl and fpr and pulled out my fuel filter that is a mess. I had it at a shop within the last 10-15k (or less) that said they put a filter in it. Did they not do as a thought or do i have something up that could be getting this black (looks like oil) substance in my filter. I cant think of anything that I have put in my tanks that would have flushed them out.

Here is a pic of it.

its either engine oil from leaky orings or algae from your tanks.

Truck wont start when cold and the glow plugs are good, points to o-rings.

Yuch. I'd def dump something in the tank to kill the algea even if you dont have it.
Gonna have to get a few filters till it clears up too.

time to buy a few filters and put about 12 oz of acetone in the fuel tank to kill and remove the algae.

Algae can grow in diesel real good but that's not algae. That's bad injector o rings.
You should never see algae in a daily driver. Farm tractors maybe. Trucks used over the road no. It's the o rings.

Did not know about the acetone additive. I have tankers of it at work. PO did not use the truck very often and had to fight algae and water in fuel (light) when I first got it.

Have you guys seen what acetone does to rubber and plastic? Just wondering. There are commercial algae killers that do not contain acetone.
Still I've seen enough o rings go bad before and this is what it does. What you are seeing is the ash that was in your oil collected on the filter. Algae usually has a pretty good smell that goes along with it.
