They said on the news tonight this is like the storm that hit in January 2007. I was at work that day. I should not of drove in. Could not see the road. Then got stuck at work for a few hours. Then it abated. Able to go home. I spent the night at my inlaws and went home the next morning. Spent the day missing work just to shovel a way into the acreage.
That storm left us with 8ft high snow drifts and cars completely buried. This storm is nothing like that storm. I wonder what the reporter was on tonight.
It was a fun drive home from work last night. Luckily I didn't have to work this morning. I wouldn't have made it. I do have to work tonight. Don't really want to mis it either. Tonight is doubletime. I may have to put insurance back on the ol' PSD...... Really hoping the tractor starts. It's plugged in, so it should.
I love driving in this type of snow too! I was bored yesterday so we went into town. The road that turns onto the highway, had about 3 feet of snow piled up right in the middle. People were getting stuck all over the city yesterday.
The big diesel just plowed through everything though. Gotta drop the tire pressure a little bit for these conditions though.
When I got home I started the backhoe up (its made to start with a shot of ether, so after a little shot, it fired right up) and plowed snow around here. Sme of the drifts were pretty deep too!
Fired up the truck and went for a rid into town. The plows had been out, so it was no trouble. There were a few good drifts where they hadn't gone. It's clear enough, now that I can get out of my yard, that I'll just take the car to work tonight.
Took me 41/2 hours to get a vehicle out this morning I have a drift that is up to my ears so I will wait for the town guy to come around with the snowblower to finish it off for me.
I shovelled our driveway out twice after it blew in. after braking my shovel, I broke down and bought a snowblower at work today. Employee discount is a great thing!
Good for you guys.
Got up at 4:30 to shovel the cars out. The Escort would not start. My truck is snowed over. Took the Taurus to work. By the time I got to the highway and through the last snow drift. The check engine light came on. Got to work. After work engine light still there. Got home went to start the Bobcat. A no go. So it is on the Battery charger and tarped and space heater to warm it up. Maybe tomorrow it will start.
Escort still no go either. I have a few drifts that need to be cleared before the next blow in. Glad the new neighbor came with his ATV with snow blade and got a path down my driveway. May have to get one of those with a blade also,
Miserable here...blizzard winds, not a lot of snow...15-20 cms, but the Blizzard level winds have created drifts.
Had to pick up my daughter at college today, unfortunately Red River College is clear across the city. Worst part of the drive was in and out of the back lane.
I took the Vibe (Toyota Matrix twin) which has snow/ice tires but no traction control...it got through ok, but I sometimes think my Buick sedan which weighs about 1000 lbs + more then the Vibe, seems to get through deep snow better, with it's electronic traction control and heavy cast iron lump of an engine sitting over the drive wheels.
The big Buick sedan surprises me...one, if not the best winter vehicle I've ever had...3 season tires and all.
I think it must be the weight and the traction control...it seems to bull it's way through snow.
Back home, I waited for the winds to die down a bit and fired up the old ('96) 5 hp/ 24 inch MTD snowblower. It's Tecumseh Snow King flathead, engine is the little engine that could. It hammers it's way through snowdrifts that are higher then the top of the auger shield.
Too bad that Tecumseh is out of business. I know that new Snowblowers are running either Briggs + Stratton or some Chinese brand of engine called MorPower, or something like that.
Tecumseh had the snowblower engine wrapped up with it's SnowKing engine line, till a domestic lawn mower company didn't pay up (went out of business) on millions of dollars of LM Tecumseh engines.
This snowstorm was mostly about the wind - not even in the league of that storm a few years ago. Was out on the highway late Saturday night/early Sunday morning and would not have wanted a smaller vehicle! The north south roads were the worst. We did the cleanup in one day around here for both yards with the big blade on the front wheel assist, the bobcat, small walk behind blower, and even a shovel!
I could not imagine not having at least some type of structure to house stuff in that has to start in the winter - even if it was one of those cheap little temporary garage packages with the plastic tarp type cover. Once the wind is factored out and with the right oils and a good battery, a short plug in is all thats required. I think those things are 4-500 bucks. Even if it lasts 2 or 3 years its cheap!!!
I looked through the receipts on the Bobcat to see when I bought the battery. !10YEARS AGO! Wow and it still works, but if let sit for a while it needs recharging. So a new Battery may help. Man I cannot believe I got it in 2000.
My Taurus was scraping the bottom of the car. The new cars just do not have the clearance from the road. Tonight I was behind a 80's 5th ave. I saw the clearance it had over the snow. Yet the Taurus was dragging bottom. I think the older car with rear wheel drive sat higher and could clear a foot of snow with no problem. The newer cars have those air danms that act as scoops catching all the snow.
I could not imagine not having at least some type of structure to house stuff in that has to start in the winter -
It sucks lemme tell ya! But you sure learn to keep the block heater working, you learn to change the oil to synthetic, and if you dont plug it in, a little blast of ether will do the trick!
That being said, your so right lol. A shed of some sort would be the cats @ss!
