Pop is correct on the zinc chromate primer. If you dont use it on metal, the paint will flake.
Use undercoating in a can from the local auto parts store. its a lot smoother than the bed liner. Sticks to dern near anything. I would probably still prime with a zinc chromate primer first.
The zinc chromate isn't expensive, and I can buy it online...same with the undercoating. Its worth a try.
Those hooks on the outside of my truck, they are rope cleats. Can't find the type I have specifically, but they make some cool ones, even ones that fold flat when you aren't using them.
ehh i wouldnt use the herculiner, i did the same prep like described on my bed, i had a metal toolbox in the back and it sloshed around after i let the bed cure for about a week, tore the hole thing up like there was someone with a metal rock rake scratching it.
i would do the prep, use POR15 then bake it. just make sure the metal is pretty warm room temp mabey a little more when you paint them...just my .02
I had the same problem with some valve covers that I bought for my cobra. I kept trying all kinds of paint with no success. I finally had them sandblasted and powder coated them. They have held up for about 7or 8 years. not real cheep, I think around $200 or so
and no, it actually looks really glossy, i had to bend a piece of sheet metal after i realized there was a hole in one of the support of my bed, i banged the H**L out of it and the paint didnt even flake. i was throughly convinced that i will be using it for everything, it leaves a reall nice gloss if you spray it on, and more like a matte flat finish if you brush it.
I also say use POR-15. I did my oil pan with it and the stuff is good. Just get one of their starter kits. It has everything you need. I was able to do about 3 coats on the oil pan with it. Just make sure you follow the directions exactly as they say. Its only about $20 + shipping. Check it out. SUPER STARTER KIT-POR-15 Inc.
i will third the POR-15 Lisa.
and don't waste you money on the herculiner. it don't hold up.
we tried it on a few trucks, and within 3 months it was peeling.
and i will take a pecan pie when you start creating.
