4X4 Problems

4X4 Problems
My son is a college student at NDSU in Fargo, ND and due to the extremely slushy streets he tried to put the truck into 4X4 and the lights come on but no 4X4. I understand that it probably is a vacum leak that I will have to fix but I am 220 miles away and he needs to have 4X4 to get the truck back to his house. Will putting the hubs in manual put the truck into 4X4 without the ESOF?

Yes. If the light comes on, the case should be in 4x4 and if you manually lock the hubs the truck should be good to go. The manual selection is there if the vacuum fails... Have him check the vacuum lines; the o ring on the backside of the hub assembly could be bad as well.

When I need 4x4 I have to manualy lock the hubs and use the dash mounted switch to go into and out of 4x4. If there is a question as to weather the hubs are locked, have your son reach under the truck (which should be in park/with parking brake on) and turn the front drive shaft and/or the knuckle at each wheel to verify all is locked. I can not read my hubs where it says auto & locked and this is a surefire way to check.
