replacing points with electronic ignition

HI all,

Thanks for the previous help...here we go again. A friend has a '72 with points. He wants to replace with an electronic ignition. Does he need to do anything besides just buy the new distributor? What problems (if any) are associated with this. Any help on this would be appreciated as I will be doing the same on my '78 in the upcoming months!

Thanks,
Rick

I converted my 69 390 with pointed ignition with a Crane digital electronic ignition conversion. It uses the distributor you already have. I had mine cleaned, curved, and it has an optical (like mallory unilite) pickup assembly installed where the points were. I had the shop install the pickup and set up the distributor, the rest of the wiring was very simple. I believe my total cost was around $160. It also utilizes the coil you already have. So far it has worked great.
