Electronic Ignition

I know this has been asked and answered before, but most of the diagrams that were linked in the older posts are broken links now.

I haver a buddy who has finally come out of the darkness and into the light- he sold his 1 ton bowtie, and bought a 74 F350 with a 360/390. It has points, and he'd like to go electronic.

The Pertronix system looks nice, but he'd feel better using factory parts, so that he can get replacements at the local parts house.

So we need a new distributor and module. How do we decide what module we need? and exactly how do we wire it in.

Much thanks in advance for any help.

The nice part about using the Pertronix system is just carry a spare set of points, condensor and a rotor, if your set up uses a different rotor, and you can convert back to get home.

Replacement parts are easy to find for our DUI Distributor.

If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:

Also, there is now an excellent installation article on the D.U.I. Distributor on the Ford-Trucks.com site at:

I'm swapping a complete DS I system onto my 360, it's a fine system as long as you use all the right parts. I got everything off the donor truck I got my power steering and disk brakes from, I think it was a 75.
It wasn't too bad finding replacement parts for the DUI I had in my other truck, but for a stock engine that system is a bit pricey. You can get everything for a DS I or DSII conversion from any parts store for under $200 as long as the core charge on the distributor is reasonable. Get a distributor for a 75 with a 360, cap, rotor, and cap adaptor for a 78 or so with a 400 so you get the big cap, and get a module and coil for a 75 if you want DS I or a 78 if you want a DSII. You'll need another +12v key on power source under the hood for the module, but that's just one wire and not hard to run.

You get what you pay for.

As far as over-the-counter Durasparks are concerned, beware of their worn out upper bushing-they only have one. We utilize a full length oil impreganted bronze bushing in our Durasparks. This improves timing accuracy and it will be more durable for you. Over-the-counter Durasparks also can have worn out advance mechanisms. And of course, our units are custom tuned on a distributor machine, whether you get our Duraspark or DUI.
