i have a 97 F350 4x4 reg cab XLT flatbed 460(what a pig ) 4:10LS DRW E4OD,all in very good shape.picked up a 92 F250 4x4 reg cab XLT pick up 7.3 idi 3:55LS SRW E4OD,tranny slips,cab is ok but the 7.3 fires right off(with new ZD 9's)cleaned out the cdr and through out the soup bowl.the high idle works but the fuel shut off solenoid needs replaced.that's next on the to do list.I pull 14K everyday machine and trailer.mostly on flat ground and some hills up in the northern part of the state.while work is slow thought i'd do some swapping.this is what i was thinking. 1.keeping the F350 pulling out the 460 replace it with the 7.3 2.getting a standard trans (not sure which one would work best with the load ZF5 or T18 )3. changing out the 4:10's for the 3:55's.wouldn't mind the E4OD but don't think it would last to long compared to the standard.so far the best i've gotten is 1 1/2 years out of the stock E4OD.need some ideas/opinions.and no i don't tow in overdrive and run 2 tranny coolers .one thing to keep in mind is we fight the heat down here like ya'll fight the cold.
well since you are gonna swap in 3.55s, Id go with a T18/T19. Bulletproof tranny, and the lack of OD will be somewhat offset by the change in rearends.
that's what i was thinking mileage won't be that good ,but it's still got to be better than 6mpg like the 460 is getting .and i think a set of little taller tires would help also.nothing crazy just a hair taller than stock.any suggestions ?
thanks dave.I know all about the u joints was getting about 9months to a set,changed grease and up to a full year so far.i switched to lucas the green stuff not the red color,also use it in the 31AA because there are no rubber seals in it for the wheel bearings.and also need to put that goose neck trailer on a diet!so a beefed up E4OD will work then with the 4:10'sand the 7.3 cool.that will give me time to find a zf5 and all the fix'ns.if it gets to bad i'll use the 6.6:1 out of the AA .will try and look up brains in ark.can't hurtand as far as the stroke ah hmmm yeah 146:1 is just a wee bit much maybe 140:1 and he'd been all right
farmert thanks checked the site and read the super tranny.3200 for one,gearvenders od 3000,stock ford jasper 2400.for a bullet poof e4od ain't much more.and 3200 even 4k with shiping? still beats the price of a new truck
