Black box under the intake

Have a '99 Expy with the 5.4...
I was replacing my alternator today and noticed a black plastic box that sits under the intake. What is it for? Only ask because one side of it was hanging off to the side. Looks like it's just a cover for the black plastic box that sits under it. Looks to be two plastic sides that connect together under the intake, on top of this box. Just wondering...

it is exactly that. it is a heat shield for the lower part of the intake.

is it bad if the cover is broken ?

I tried to push together the two halfs together and the connector piece broke right off it was so brittle. Another genious idea--making a heat-shield out of plastic. So then the question is =--how important is it?
