PSD tach's work of the CPS.

IDI tach's work off the sensor on the IP drive gear, and that is probably where your problem is.

Look for the insulation to be pulled back exposing bare wires where they go into the sensor.

In your 150 cab, I know the wiring is not there.

Tach sending unit plugs into the harness, and on diesels the harness has the wiring in it.
Clusters that did not have a tach, do not have the printed circuits on them for the tach.

If you get the cluster with a tach, then run wires from the sensor to the cluster plug, you should be able to have a tach.

Aftermarket tach?

Is there any way to hook up an aftermarket tach to the sensor on a 6.9?

I think ours use what is called a 'hall effect' tach so a regular gasser tach will not work.
