After changing the rear i my 94 4.0, the abs light came on, Tried changing sensor on top of rear diff with the one that was in the origional rear. Light still on. Before I go buy a new sensor, is there anything else that could cause this problem? Also are there any other symptoms of that sensor being faulty. Can it play tricks with the proportional valve? My rear tires would lock up if I hit the brakes hard.
Well we don't know anything about how the two vehicles are equipped, like the diffrences in engines transmissions, brake systems, vehicle year/model, ect, ect, so there isn't any way right now to know just what you have & if a ABS computer swap would work.
Even then I'm not sure, as I'm not an ABS computer guru, but I'll bet someone reading this thread knows the answer.
Seems to me a Ford Dealer, or brake shop with the proper computer, could reprogram it without much trouble & that would likely be much easier to do.
I have no idea if they are 4 wheel abs or rear wheel abs How would I tell. Will it say on the door sticker? There are no sensors on the rear hubs. Only the one on top of rear diff that I know of.
I'm not sure where the ABS computer is on the 94. Probably in the cab on the drivers side under the dash, or maybe behind the kick panel.
Raise the hood & look down on the drivers side inner fender below & in front of the the brake master cylinder, to find the ABS motor & valving.
If it has 4 lines coming out, two going aft & two going foward to the front wheels, it'll be four wheel ABS.
Two lines coming out & going aft, it's a rear wheel only ABS system.
If the vehicles have different ABS systems, the ABS computer, or it's programming is likley to be different.
took off rear brakes today to check something else. noticed the pads looked like they were wearing funny and felt kinda soft. decided to change pads. during change i noticed on driver side, previous owner had the pads reversed(had the e-brake arm on the small pad). put everything back together the right way with new pads and took it for a little drive and the abs light is out. will drive more and hope the problem is solved. thanks for all the replies.
