06 6.0 psd Kids call it B.A.R.T.

I have had my 06 6.0 for a yr now and LOVE IT. I have changed my exhaust to 4.0 catback(mbrp ss) Gauges and sct. Only problem Ive had was two weeks off the lot was told a oring blew in the hpop system, shut truck down warranty repaired. Truck runs like a champ. I use a sct tuner, only running on performance. Havent used towing yet waiting for camping season. Went on 3000 mile rd trip for christmas AVERAGED 17.2 mpg as per display(hmmm). But as stated prior you have to keep the maintance up. Transmission flush, coolant flush. Next I will be installing coolant filter(sitting in box on garage floor). Have not had a problem with egr valve, but one day plan on cleaning it . May look to delete when warranty is out but if it aint broke why fix it. That is just my oppion. This is my first diesal truck and I wouldn't trade if for a d*()E or ch#$Y any day of the week. Now if I could only find the end of the wires for the aux switches I would be a happy camper. LOL.

IMO - Pulling the EGR valve (to inspect) can give you a good idea of what is going on in the combustion process. This is important for a number of reasons. Fuel economy is one, but turbo performance/reliability is another reason (sensors perform more reliability also when you do not have overfueling, soot formation, etc). It also can give you an early warning on an EGR cooler leak. I pull mine every 25k - 30k, just to look. I did update mine in late 2007 because of some EGR valve design improvements. As far as the EGR cooler leak possibility, two items help prevent/minimize problems from this system .....
1. coolant filter
2. most recent flash update

If you know EARLY when your oil cooler is plugging up on the coolant side (new flash), you can pretty much protect your EGR cooler. This is very important because MANY bad things start happening when coolant gets into the intake. The coolant filter is VERY important - lots of threads on this!

I am definitely in the camp of doing the maintenance and enjoying the benefits in improved reliability. I also think that a number of problem areas were addressed in the later year models (06 and 07), but there are many 03' and 04's on the road that have been outstanding in their reliability. Many folks have operated reliabily with their EGR system still installed. You just have to watch for issues, do the proper preventative maintenance, and make sure you have good combustion. These aren't guarantee's, but problems are very common if you skimp in these areas.

One thing to watch for when buying a used 6.0L is aftermarket performance mods (either installed or worse yet, evidence of them having been installed but recently removed). If the previous owner modded the truck without being attentive to the issues that the mods create (good rule of thumb - all performance mods create issues that need to be considered), then you could have issues. I am not saying mods are bad, just that you do not add 70 hp without considering the impact.

Quite some time ago, I started a thread on buying a used 6.0L - it might help you. I will post the link when I can get to it.
