Ok, so I fixed my leaking Oil Cooler. That was fun .
Everything is back together, not leaking, trucks runs fine except a little rough at idle now and I have a weird oil pressure reading.
I know the gauge on the dash is pretty much a dummy gauge, but it says I have NO oil pressure at idle or under 1200 rpms for that matter. As soon as it hits 1200 the gauge shoots right up and stays steady. As soon as I let off the throttle to slow down and it goes below 1200 the gauge shows no pressure.
guess what? i've had the same problem since i too fixed my leaky oil cooler. i have been using it like that though. someone told me that maybe one of the gaskets that seals from the engine to the cooler might be in a wrong position and others have told me that it isn't possible. i never had a manual gauge on it either. i've ran it like that for about 3000 miles already and havent nothiced anything getting worse but who knows. i just get confused with everyones opinions and contradictions.
wiggle the wire on the sending unit and see what it does. All of my trucks had this problem. If it changes the gauge reading when you wiggle the wire connector then you can cut off that push on connector and install a crimp on eye connector instead. Then put it back on the sender with a nut.instead. That will stay tight.
How long have you run it since the repair & did you change the oil ?..
I've driven about 50 miles since changing it, and I did put fresh oil and filter in.

Weird, the truck seems to run fine. Funny that both of ours would do the same thing.

Good idea, I'll check the sending unit connection. Where is the sending unit for that anyways?
has anyone successfully fixed this. that dude there just traded in for another truck and never solved anything either. i hate to drive my truck like that too but just have no choice at the moment. sometimes i think i just should of left the leaky oil cooler alone. i hate fixing something and have another problem come from it
I just noticed a similar thing in my truck last night!
Gauge bounces around a bit. More so at low rpm, but running on the highway at 1600-1700 didn't make it stop entirely, either.
I immediately thought "sending unit" and hopefully will have a chance to look at it this afternoon.
Coincidentally, I just had a water pump installed last week. (Sorry guys-I've put a couple of them in before, but I am going on 48 years old and past the days when I am willing to work under drop lights at night in the driveway in below freezing weather. I can afford to pay someone for that kind of job now because, in part, I saved money doing that kind of work myself all through the early years)
I am thinking the mech bumped the sensor or the wires when he was in there. Wouldn't surprise me because they left a wire unhooked off my brake fluid reservoir a couple of months ago when I had some brake work done that made the abs light come on.
Anyway, I was going to replace the sending unit anyway since I don't think they are too expensive and I'll reconfigure the wire connector to make sure it is a good connection. And yes, I will do this work myself!
I'll post results whenever I get it done this weekend.
Brownie, pull the oil filter back off and check the filter bypass there. on your truck it was staked in instead of being c clipped like the later trucks where and when you were messing with the cooler it could have come out. mine came out when i was pulling mine out, but i was putting in an SD end cap with the c clipped bypass anyways so i didn't care.
You guys with oil pressure problems really need to go wiggle that wire connector around while someone watches the gauge. I'm telling you this is the problem on the majority of them.

right after an oil cooler install i bet its not. on the early trucks the oil filter bypass will pop out very very easily and give it low oil pressure. promise you. might not be his problem, but that wire is nowhere close to the oil cooler and worked fine before the oil cooler install.
It may be the bypass valve but I've slammed the hood down before and lost oil pressure before too. From that darn sensor coming loose. I've lost oil pressure just from my wife plopping her butt down in the passenger seat too. It used to be fun ribbing her about that. Now she gets mean.
How come both of mine have the snap ring on them? 94 and 97? I wonder if they already had this problem?

has to be b/c they already had this problem. the '94 shouldn't have the snap ring so they had to have replaced it with the other style at some point.
