Okay something is wrong here

Okay I posted a thread on here a while back about my fuel consumption problems. Everyone just said check tire pressure and all that. Well I did. And its just getting worse it seems. Something is just not right. I have checked everything I can think of to try and find something wrong that could be causing it. Its really making me mad because I cant figure it out and I cant afford to be dumping all this money on fuel when Im trying to save for a car( a 1970 olds 442). So, does anyone have any idea what could be causing this. My only thought is maybe the injectors are going out on me and leaking. I do notice a lot of white smoke on cold start and the first take off down the road is just clouds of white smoke. Any ideas?

Sounds like leaky injectors to me. I'd run some diesel kleen through it and see if it helps any.

Getting close to 115,000. And those are the original injectors.

seems to me everyone thinks they should be changed about every 100,000. They are wear items and do need to be replaced periodically. I doubt they would ever stop working altogether.

So do you think that those combined with winter fuel could have dropped it 4-5 mpg?

Worn out injectors and winter fuel alone shouldnt have dropped it that much. Something else is amiss here. Wait and see what everyone elses opinions are.

Well during the summer with the turbo on I was getting about 18. Turned the fuel up in October and then was more like 15-16. Not good, but not that bad. Seems like it has steadily gotten worse to know its at the point where it is absolutely terrible. Like 10. I cleaned the cdr with gas to make sure that wasnt it. I still think that that thing is sucking oil through my valve cover because inside the tube from it to the intake always has oil in it. But I am not using much oil at all.

How many miles are you driving it at a time, short trips in the winter where the truck barely reaches operating temps is hard on fuel. Winter longer idling times makes you have low mileage. A thermostat stuck open = less fuel mileage especially in winter.
What kind of mileage are you getting. How long does it take for it to reach 190 degrees.

I make fairly shory trips to school and back everyday. By the time I get there the coolant temp will be on the mark past the cool one. So it is pretty well warmed up. And i only have the stock temp gauge so not sure on how long it takes to get to 190. And how can I tell if my thermostat is stuck open?

If you leave it idle for awhile and it is cold outside the heater air will usually be cooler than runnin. Another thing that will eat fuel is a locked up fan clutch.

Okay now we are getting somewhere. So your saying at idle the heater air will be cooler than it was driving down the road? And the fan clutch thing. Any easy ways to tell if its locked up?
