I will change my torque converter soon and would like some input on wich converter should i use? brands, specifications, etc. I plan on running 33" or 35" size tires, and have 3.73 gearing (the rest is on my signature). Gaining some more power at the wheels would be great.
your not helping much of anything with out upping your gears. leave the TC alone and install 4.56 or 4.88 gears. a converter change wont improve the health of the tranny enough to handle that size of tires.
I went with 4.56 to go with my 33" tires.
Considering it is driven mostly on the hiway, I now wish I had gone 4.11's.
The overdrive is the only thing that makes it tolerable.
Offroad though, 4.56's are great with this tire size.
I know my current gearing isn't that great, and i plan to switch to 4.10 some time soon, but that was not the question right now. I want to know whatever there is to know about TCs that might help me pick the right one. Mine has been running since the truck was new and i'm pretty sure it isn't helping my performance all that much as it is right now.
I recentlly changed my T/C. I got a billit one off E-bay. You do not want a Diesel T/C. They have six bolts instead of four. Also, they have a differnt stall speed.
The billet converter I put in my Bronco has a 1200 rpm stall speed, but only 4 mounting studs. I don't think the billet converters are available with more than 4 studs, at least not from Dynamic.
I want to know whatever there is to know about TCs that might help me pick the right one.
For what purpose? Are you just driving on the street? Are you building an off-road mud monster? Are you just cruising around? Are you going to drag race?
All of these questions would lead to different "right one" answers.
I'm not sure which "billet" I have. But they sent me a deisel by mistake with six bolts. I didnt find this out untill I had the truck torn all apart. (of course)
I do some off-roading, as i travel whenever i can (check my gallery), but mostly it's a daily driver, city/highway. So in the gearing i'll at most upgrade to 4.11. So there you go, i want a balanced truck that can perform well on both highway and off-road (leaning more torwards the off-roading).
Btw, my fanclutch just died (locked itself, so the fan is turning ALWAYS), so i think i'll take it out (of course, only the fanclutch and the fan, the pulley stays) and replace it with a couple of electric fans.
