You should be able to try a couple of panic stops to activate the ABS (no cars around you). If the brakes get worse after wards, then you know
Dave
I would suggest trying the abs on a slippery surface, gravel, grass, water. If there's too much air in the system I think it's possible the wheels may not lock on pavement when a panic stop is applied so the abs won't activate. It's also a lot easier on the tires.
AutoEnginuity® - OBD2 Scan Tool - Professional PC and PDA Diagnostics has a pretty complete product line for bi-directional scan/testing. Base package won't do the job however. You either need vehicle specific (brand ) or the software bundle (which covers most any brand ), to be able to access any sensor, and run the tests. Might be be ok, but the base package and only one brand specific software, limits a bunch what you can work on.
Well here we go, I bled the brakes but could not get the bleeder open on the front pass side. I drove the truck and the brakes were not right. I finally opened the bleeder and with much difficulty pushed the brake down and got fluid coming out the bleeder, I am pretty sure there was an air pocket. I then drove the truck and it was much better. I am now thinking I will re bleed exactly the way the manaul says, all four wheels and hopefully will be 100%. I found a good local shop with a scanner to read and clear codes.
Any additional advise or comments? Again, thanks for all the help, I have saved a lot of money with the help from members of FTE.
Are you using a vacuum bleeder ? If not, it saves a lot of time either now or next time. I use the Mityvac . Works very well for brake bleeding, and with the bag of adapters that come with it, you can test virtually anything that works off vacuum.
I don't see a number on it, but, it's the metal one, and it just says "Silverline". My first one was the plastic version, and it was pretty old and worn, sort I ordered this one, maybe 5 years ago.
I'm having this same problem with my 98 F-150 now. Been several times to the dealer for ABS bleeds. They are now figuring out that they think it is the ABS HCU unit. Will keep you updated if that fixes it.
The dealer replaced the ABS HCU and the brakes still aren't right.
Does anyone have a schematic for a 1998 5.4L front disc / rear drum brake system from a Ford Service Manual??... all the way from the brake pedal to each wheel? I want to see what else I haven't changed. Is there anything else in the system other than the booster, MC, HCU, calipers, and wheel cylinders? Is there a proportional valve anywhere??
3 - master cylinders
1 - HCU
2 - new calipers
2 - rebuilt rear drums
tons of bleeds
