Yesterday at my daughter's softball practice I had the rare pleasure of speaking in detail to a Ford tech. This man works at a Ford dealer in Franklin, Va which is smack in the middle of Virgina's farm country. He said they sell more trucks than cars.
I was commenting on the F-150 transmissions and his response was very enlightening.
Quote: Since the new F-150 has been out, I haven't done a single piece of work to a six speed transmission. These transmissions are different and they feel different. end Quote.
He jokingly said that he's working on more 6.0L trucks than anything else.
That's good news. Let's hope the trend continues...
Should have asked him about the 'one wheel outside the bed farther than the other' problem. You know - something really important!
Or better yet - which oil, which filter, and how often do I change it?
Seriously, thanks for the information.
That's funny! I haven't made my big purchase yet, waiting till 2011 so I'm not too familair with all the quirks but the transmission issue seems to keep popping up.
Better not talk to the tech at my dealer. I got my truck back today after he replaced the main control assembly because it wouldn't lock up the torque converter. And oh yea it only had 323 miles on it when it went bad.
Today I was going up a hill when another truck pulled out in front of me. I had to let off the gas momentarily, but then was able to begin accelerating again as the other truck picked-up speed. As I was pressing down on the gas, I felt the transmission "shudder" as if it was jumping back and forth between two gears. Has anyone one else experienced this? Yes 07 Expedition w/ 3.73s has done that to me in stop and go traffic. Not as bad after the trans was updated with the revised clutch packs now shipped in the 09 trucks.

I have the same "shudder" problem under light acc at 30 mph to 40 mph range. For some reason my screw likes to be in 5th or 6th gear at 30mph. If it would just downshift or stay in 4th gear I would have no problems BTW 4.6 3v w/3.73
Well, what I found out isn't good. The shuddering is a problem with the six-spped transmission that there's no real, definite fix for. It is a problem that is intermittent in almost all the trucks. There are some flashes available for some trucks, but no guarantees. The service manager told me to give the truck a few hundred miles and then bring it in for them to check. Right now, the truck has less than 400 miles on it.

Lemon law it. Take it in 3x then file the paperwork.
Well Ed mine is at 2100 miles and the problem has not gone away. They looked at it and want to do a tsb fix 09-22-12, basically adj the pinion angle. The trans acts up when warm and the trans is in 5th or 6th gear at 30-40 mph under light or moderate acc and it seems like once in the 5th or 6th gear it does not want to downshift, causing the lugging/shudder. I have been using tow/haul mode and have had NO issue with any shudder/ engine lugging.
If it works ok in Tow-Haul then it has to be an electronic problem with the PCM program. The only fix is to reflash the PCM with different shift strategies. I'd keep the pressure on Ford and the dealer for a suitable remedy to the problem.
