I have went all kinds of bull with my 09 Lariat vibration. They claim it is not in the transmission but drive line. After waiting for months to get my vibration issue resolved I had had enough and called the 800 number in the owners manual. Last August (09) I had Ford engineers jumping all over this thing. There was also a customer represetative that called me every week for 6 weeks to follow-up on the progress. The bottom line is that they can't fix my vibration as of yet anyway. They made it better by shimming the pinion angle per my driving habit. All crew-cab 6.5' box F150's have 2 piece driveshaft and there is no way to adjust the angles at the hanger bearing so under acceleration the shaft angles change causing a shutter or what they call a vibration. My guess is that they have gotten some left over design engineers from Toyota. All 08 and older use a 1 piece shaft, when they lengthened the cab on the super crew they had to go to a 2 piece shaft that is why 5.5' crewcabs and shorter trucks don't vibrate.
I am going to suggest something that has been on my mind for years, starting with 2 piece driveshaft in an E250 van. I wouldnt be surprised if the basic support bearing design has not changed in many years. I got involved in changing it out once and noticed something that may or may not be the case with yours. This may be totally useless to you, but I figure that since no one else has come up with a solution--------why not mention this!
The rubber insulator that surrounds the actual bearing is/was not a solid piece of rubber, but was a web-like design. Presumably to give more flex/cushion and that may be the problem. I alway intended to try to inject some plain old silicone, like for home sealant from a caulk gun, into the open spaces in the webbing of the rubber to firm it up but still give some cushion. Maybe even find some harder rubber "rods" that could be cut and inserted in to the voids and glued in. I never got to the "roundtuits" before I sold the van. I had noticed that in a hard pull (boats & TT's) there was a definite shudder in the vehicle (460/C6). Dont recall noticing any vibration such as you describe.
This may not be of any value since the new support bearings may be solid to start with. Anyway, it is something to maybe look at, since no one else apparently has a solution. Fortunately, not being an engineer---for many years---my mind has not been shackled like so many engineers minds seem to be. LOL
Why is it so hard for Ford to make a reliable tranny?? ANYTHING you make over and over for years should have close to ZERO problems. I have been hearing about Ford transmission nightmares for almost 30 years! I had Ford and GM transmissions from the 70s and early 80's that I could not damage even when I tried. And I tried HARD!
i agree element! its crap. i like the power of the 6 speed but common dont they test this stuff before sending it on its way. it makes me pretty upset paying for it. they need to get there heads outta there a$%^%& .

I love the 6.0, no problems with mine and i love the motor, switch from the "old diesels" to "new diesels" caused some complications, as well as some bad engineeering from International, i have high hopes for the new Ford 6.7L

Hello!
Bought my 2010 F150 S/C Saturday, it is now Wednesday and one visit to the dealer down for the transmission already. LOUD clunk from reverse to drive or the other way around. They re-flashed the transmission yesterday and to be honest, it maybe a little worse after the service!!
4.6 with 6 speed transmission in a BEAUTIFUL truck.... Too bad, but I will not put up with it. The Oxford White will be a great backdrop for bright red letters. I will let everyone know.....
What sucks is that the F150 is a replacement for a 1998 Tacoma which was bought back by Toyota for frame rust.... I can't complain there, they gave me 1.5 KBB retail for it. Overall a nice downpayment for my F150... Too bad Toyota is having all the problems they are having, would have bought another one. 12 years, over 100K miles and other than brakes, tires and oil changes, NO PROBLEMS. F150, 1000 miles, 4 days old and getting ready to bring it into the shop for the second time!!!!
They are not going to start tearing into the transmission, I simply can not put up with that. I just shot the Credit Union an email asking if they can stop payment on either the loan check or the downpayment. At least then I could have a bigger stick than just the lemon law......
Thanks Jake,
I been battling from day one too.Ford totaly sucks when it comes to admitting they have made a serious error in the transmission desige,so serious that from what I rear the 2011 no longer has the 6speed in any trucks.Back to the 4sp auto with od.That in itself tell me Ford scapped the tranny cause of millions of complaints.Prepare for a battle, they won't even drop the pan to look at the debree inside. If you noticed they even eliminated the trans dipstick under the hood, you have to pull out a plug on the tranny and try to read a 2" dipstick, that is also where you have to try to put the fluid in.What the heck are there brain dead designers thinking?Be3 sure you get a work ordr every time you go to Ford, they try to sneak you out with out one cause you need them for your next step, the lemon law.Good luck,I know it is dis heartning to wind up with a lemon. The trans just gets worse and does things intermitently that make you wonder if you will make home.Pete
With regards to Toyota and their frame rust, rotors, head gasket issues- they have been design issues for 10 years and the only way Toyota ever considered re-purchasing the vehicles is because of the 3 class-action lawsuits. I think it's great they gave someone 1.5 times the KBB value, but remeber, that was only given after 3 separate law firms in different parts of the country spent well over $1 million dollars and Toyota could not afford to allow the litigation to go to court- the cost was way too high. They still have never addressed the V6 head gasket failures nor the brake rotor issues- and have they ever "fixed' the 100 pound max load capacity of their tailgate- hell no, my 1974 datsun p/u had a capacity of 300 lbs IIRR!
I won't even begin to go into Nissan's NAP-Z series engines.....yes the blocks are very strong but the engines operate in a very critical range and overheat easy to the point of head gasket failure but in the past 20 years have thy changed the design to accomodate these variables- hell No!
I personally never buy a 1st year product vehicle of vehicle component- because of all the hard work the general buying public will do for me in advance of discovering all the product failure points and then allowing the engineers to "fix" them! I always purchase the 3rd year- by that time any design/engineering/assembly flaws have been identified and fixed or, it is well known the vehicle is junk.
I have found these forums to be informative and amusing. When we read about a problem we immediately look for that problem on are own trucks. I look at it as "looking" for a problem that if we wouldn't have read about it it probably wouldn't have been brought to our attention. I buy a new truck every year and have since 1976 and for the most part have there good parts and some quirks. My biggest problem is I compare the new truck to the last one and sometimes they just act differently. I don't nit pick anymore. I drive them and if it breaks it has a good warranty. Out of the 35 new trucks I have purchased they all have something that feels like a problem. My last truck was a Tundra and it had a clunk when starting out. I never took it in, I just put miles on it and in time it went away and was forgotten.
I understand how people can get the red a$$ with a truck when the keys of a new one wasn't handed to them because they have an issue, but sometime we need to put mile on these things and see if they don't ware in and if it gets worst or not better then have them check it out. When all else fails, go trade the dang thing off for a GM product and I will promise you will be ready to shoot yourself after owning it 5000 miles.
Just turned over 17k on my '09 F-150 Screw. It's got the 5.4 with 6 speed tranny. So far the only thing I've noticed is going up and down hills at varying speeds it will shift up and down; which seems quite normal to me. No shuddering or anything else. I've not tried the rolling forward/backward/reverse thing and really don't plan to. Oh, I also notice that little hard shift from 1st to 2nd, but it's no big deal and doesn't happen all the time. I think it's just according to my foot on the pedal. It certainly isn't a reason for me to mess with the techs trying to reflash or reprogram anything. It ain't broke, so I ain't fixing it.
I feel that I have a great truck. I had a ten year old Dodge Ram and now am a true blue oval convert.
