This happened to me 3 different times in last 2 months . Driving down road & everything in gauge cluster & radio go DEAD, TRUCK is a 2003 f-350 7.3 still runs when this happens. New batterys & alt . After about 15 seconds gauges come up & evt is normal.
Sounds like it could be a loose electrical connection for the power to the instrument cluster. I think there are 3 or 4 circuits from the fuse panel to the instrument cluster. You might check the schematics for your model and see which one of these is the most likely culprit. Intermittent electrical issues can be a bear to troubleshoot. You generally have a much better chance of fixing the problem if it is completely broke.
As a quick easy check to do also, check the wires under the column covers. Easy check for peace of mind, and they are know to cause electrical problems shorting out. Here is the link. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...uestion-3.html
My guess would have been and already has been posted. Wire harness under the steering column. Been there, replaced that underwarranty. Only in my case the wire insulator was not worn through. The wire harness had been routed in such a manner that the harness would get pinched in the tilt part of the column. This caused a very small pin hole ***** through the insulator into the wire which would cause the wire to short out from time to time.
I really think my problem is in alt. Even thou its been rebuilt by a shop that I have been doing buissness with for 20+ years and never had a problem. I'll have to talk to him to see what he thinks.
