Just noticed that Powermaster is selling brand new starters for IDI's & Powerstrokes. These are the Nippondenso type gear reduction. I think it's a little higher price than what some of you are paying for new starters, but since they build high-compression race car starters all the time, I would think the quality would be pretty good. Anyone have any comments about Powermaster stuff in general? Thanks. Powermaster Diesel Starters - JEGS
my bosch starts my truck just fine as will most any new one. I dont know much about the power master starters but i do know that it is a bit pricey for an online purchase. If it is more expensive online than what i pay in canada, i wont buy it and that one is almost 50 bucks more than what i paid, that and is says f150/250, didnt know there were diesel f150's haha
Advance Auto carries those starters. If you check you'll see a one year warranty. I got a remaned Mitsu for alot less but the main difference is it has a lifetime warranty. To me wanting to keep a truck a long time the length of warranty is more of an issue than the upfront expense.
I had both my Mitsubishi starters rebuilt in the last year by a local rebuilder, Brighouse Electric in Richmond, BC. They do a great job and go thru the entire starter; new solenoid, bearings, brushes, machining, etc...
I had 255kkm on my 93 and it was just cranking a noticably slower when it got cold so I thought was due after I had installed new batteries last year.
The rebuilt brought it right back and she cranks like new again. Should be good for another 17 years I am told.
Cost for the rebuilt vs. a new ended up almost the same.
I just like proven stuff. You always have that little risk with new stuff that it is not as good or won't last as long. They seem to engineer things tighter all the time. Usually the stuff that was over-engineered will last the longest and nowadays you just can't over-engineer things if you want to stay in business.
The Mitsubishi starter weights a lot more than the new starters, feel more heavy duty, as they say "Built to Last"
