When I first got my 76 F100, I changed the oil, and filter, and when I refilled it, it only took 3 quarts to fill it up. It appeared that only a small amount came out also. I put 4 quarts in it, but I feel like thats still not enough, cause my manual says 6 quarts with a filter change. It looks like the original dipstick, but I don't know for sure. Do y'all think I should run 6 quarts, and ignore the dipstick, or is it possible something is not letting all the oil out? The truck runs fine, and has no other problems to speak of. I welcome any opinions!!
there is an oil baffle in the pan, helps keep oil on the pick up tube. The edges and bottom might be clogged keeping half the oil up front. try beating on the pan a little with a rubber hammer while draining to see if a bit more comes out.
is dipstick tube fully seated into block?
Would definately want to track that problem down could be headaches for sure.
run it, and get the oil hot, then change it. I pulled the pan off 1 with those symptoms years ago, and the po had never changed the oil. when the pan came off, it looked like a jello mold in the shape of the pan. it would not take the proper amount of oil either. after a removeal of all the crap, it was normal again. mabe while the plug is uit, stick something up in there, to see if you have the same problem
Might not hurt to be sure the oil filler cap is removed while draining the crankcase. I haven't had the issue with a car engine but did on an APU...the crankcase would not readily drain without removal of the filler cap.
I've never seen or heard of a I6 with one,but I know some of Ford's V8's had a double sump oil pan, drain plug in front and back.Seen a couple on late '70's cars that had a cross member and not much ground clearance, what a pita!I doubt that you have one of them, but had to mention it.But you can bet that old girl holds 5-6 qts. if it's truly empty.
Well,I got up in the oil pan with a nylon brush, and there is nothing on the bottom as far as gunk goes. I put 5 quarts back in it with a new filter. My dipstick doesn't have any kind of stopper up in the little metal cap at the top, and I'm thinking maybe it's going too far into the tube. I tapped on the pan after it was all drained, and it sure sounded empty. Surely it has to take 5 quarts with a new filter. I'll see what happens. Thanks for the info folks!
